Ian Blackwater is a writer and a realist. When he gets news that his novel "Volkswagens and Velociraptors" is about
to be made into a movie by a rogue American director, he's far too sceptical to think that all his Hollywood dreams are about
to come true. And that's very wise of him.
Nevertheless, he finds himself transported first as a spectator, then as a participant in the movie shoot, taking place
in a California trailer park that's far outside the glamorous borders of Tinsel Town. As the film making proceeds by fits
and starts Ian finds himself drawn to Moorhead Phil's Automotive Freak show, camped in the speedway next door.
There he meets Leezza, a daredevil stunt driver who each night jumps her car over an ever-lengthening line of Volkswagen
Beetles. Inside one of the Beetles is Barry Osgathorpe, an Englishman lost in America, who wants Leezza to obey the laws
of gravity and bring her car crashing down on him to put him out of his misery.
As the worlds of movie shoot and freak show begin to merge, Ian Blackwater discovers that dreams - even Hollywood dreams
- are strangely malleable and that roles can change in very unexpected ways.
